I struggle remembering names of birds. There are so many to recall and many are very easy to get mixed up. However, there are a few birds that are much easier to remember thanks to some painfully obvious names. One such savior in the bird universe is the yellow-headed blackbird. This may come as a shock, but it gets its name because it's a blackbird with a yellow head!
This design is not hard at all to make. The trickiest part is the small black segment around the eye. Yellowheart is the best option for the head but that wood has been difficult to come by lately for many scrollers. Some other options to consider are iroko or osage orange. Of course, you can always go the stained route but I have yet to find a yellow stain I'm 100% happy with.
Please note: This pattern includes basic instructions. A general understanding of making intarsia is recommended, but not required. Don't feel restricted to using only the wood types we suggest. Experiment with other options and use what is available to you.

Tools & Materials:
There are very few strict requirements for tools in making intarsia. Most of the tools listed can be replaced with others or are simply used to speed up the process. It also gives us woodworkers an excuse for a new tool! I've provided links to recommended items for any who may need them. This pattern makes a 4" by 4" red-winged blackbird.
