Wizards are characters that have fascinated me since very early childhood. My favorite books to read almost always had wizards or some kind of magic in them. Same thing goes for my favorite movies. I have always been drawn to the magical and mysterious nature of wizards in stories. They also tend to have impressive beards! It's only natural, that a wizard design would make it to the design list!
This design isn't very complex, but it does have some small segments. The nose being the smallest and trickiest to cut. This design also plays around with a bit of textured carving detail in the beard. I almost always go with a dark walnut hat, but the color is very flexible. I also tend to use spalted wood for the beard to give it a salt & pepper look, but this too can be swapped out for a different color.
Please note: This pattern includes basic instructions. A general understanding of making intarsia is recommended, but not required. Don't feel restricted to using only the wood types we suggest. Experiment with other options and use what is available to you.

Tools & Materials:
There are very few strict requirements for tools in making intarsia. Most of the tools listed can be replaced with others or are simply used to speed up the process. It also gives us woodworkers an excuse for a new tool! I've provided links to recommended items for any who may need them. This pattern makes a 4" by 4" red-winged blackbird.
