Free Pattern Friday: Squid Mini Intarsia

Squids and octopus subjects are among our most popular wall hangings. We made this design to bring some cephalopod fun to our miniature lineup. Squids have always looked like such a bizarre alien-like creature with all of those waving tentacles seeming to have a mind of their own. They have also captured the minds of ancient story tellers being the basis of many sea monsters, like the Kraken.

While our squid design is fairly easy to make, being made from a single type of wood, it takes a deceptively long time to create. All those tentacles add up after all! I prefer to use red cedar since it has a pinkish fleshy color, but feel free to use any kind of wood. Squids come in all different colors, shapes, and sizes!

Please note: This pattern includes basic instructions. A general understanding of making intarsia is recommended, but not required. Don't feel restricted to using only the wood types we suggest. Experiment with other options and use what is available to you

Tools & Materials:

There are very few strict requirements for tools in making intarsia. Most of the tools listed can be replaced with others, or are simply used to speed up the process. It also gives us woodworkers an excuse for a new tool! I've provided links to recommended items for any who may need them. This pattern makes a 4" by 2" robin.

We hope you enjoyed making this pattern. If you would like to see more content like this, please consider buying us a coffee or subscribe to our monthly "Pattern Subscription" plan. It helps to support future blog posts and you get access to all of our previous Free Pattern Friday giveaways. Be sure to share your pictures on Facebook and tag @Entwood Quest! Now, go make some sawdust!
