Whenever I think of red-winged blackbirds my mind always goes back to a happy and funny memory that happened many years ago. While it's true that I admire all types of wildlife, I have difficulty in identifying certain animals and birds have always been difficult for me for some reason. So, whenever I see a bird while out on a walk, I'd always give them nicknames like "red-bellied brownbird", "shiny crow", or "green headed duck". Of course this drove my wife, Hazel, crazy since she studied many of these birds while in college, but I just could never recall the birds' names. One day I spotted what I called a "red-winged blackbird", which I thought was just my made up nickname. She rolled her eyes and started looking up the bird in a bird ID book. Much to her disbelief, and mine, it was the actual name! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to repeat this achievement since.

Our red-winged blackbird pattern is a fairly simple design. It does have some small pieces, but most all are fairly easy to fit together, and the shaping is also straightforward. Together, that makes this design a great beginner choice for anyone interested in making miniature intarsia.

Please note: This pattern includes basic instructions. A general understanding of making intarsia is recommended, but not required. Don't feel restricted to using only the wood types we suggest. Experiment with other options and use what is available to you.

Tools & Materials:

There are very few strict requirements for tools in making intarsia. Most of the tools listed can be replaced with others or are simply used to speed up the process. It also gives us woodworkers an excuse for a new tool! I've provided links to recommended items for any who may need them. This pattern makes a 4" by 4" red-winged blackbird.

We hope you enjoyed making this pattern. If you would like to see more content like this, please consider buying us a coffee or subscribe to our monthly "Pattern Subscription" plan.
